There is no hiding ...

... from the massive heatwave that is turning parts of Australia into an urban heat island! It is being referred to as the 'Dome of Heat!' Our poor little Down Under island (the worlds driest inhabited continent) is being hit with dreadful temperatures and fires.

Perth has been under this onslaught since just before Christmas, and now Adelaide, Melbourne, Tassie, Canberra and Sydney are feeling the full force as well.  Temps around 43°C (or 110°F) are predicted and expected. Unless our fellow Aussie blogging friends are in air-conditioned comfort there will be no sewing happening today!

And give a little thought to my daughter, down in Melbourne for the week at Beach Volleyball Nationals ...

Thinking of all my fellow Aussie bloggers - keep cool!!!

  1. It sure has been hot here in Australia and the fires have been terrible with so many homes lost. Here in Port Hedland it gets extremely hot... our temps go up over 50 and the hottest I've had here is 54 and OMG that's soooo hot. Thankfully I live and work in airconditioning but my poor hubby works in civil construction and he gets to feel the full brunt of it all. Here's hoping the weather settles back down to normal for everyone again soon.

    1. Working in AC is a bonus - as a teacher (on holidays luckily) we don't have AC in the rooms, and some days are just shocking.
Love your little part of Australia ...

  2. I drove back from Byron to Hobart at the end of last week and for a whole day travel the temp gauge on my car read 45 degrees! I had to keep stopping at rest stops to put my dog under a tap! Beach volleyball in this weather? I hope your daughter is OK.

  6. Oh goodness. I'd rather have the opposite: the negative version of that. Keep safe and cool if possible.

  7. We don't have AC... I'm at home with my kids and they both have friends over. Out the back I have a view of remnant blue gum forest. Earlier this morning the tallest gums were dropp their leaves in the heat (!! even though they're evergreens), and now they're swaying in the wind - definitely bush fire weather. This morning we cooled down under a hose in the yard, but this afternoon we might try the local pool, though I expect it will be very crowded! Fingers crossed for no more catastrophic fires...

  8. Yep, Judith, the heat is quite debilitating. But, as you say, we're a tough lot here. We are really feeling it as we empty our house ready for demolition. We are working morning & night shifts (ha ha).

    1. You picked a 'great' time of year to be out in the heat working! I'd be getting those flood-lights out and pulling a night shift...

  9. Oh my. This reminds me of my trip to the UAE. Anyone that knows me knows I *love* heat. But, I do have my limits and 100+ degrees is my limit! I hope you all get some cool relief soon. Be safe!

  10. Glad to hear you are a tough lot with the temps you are having. I do hope you get relief soon though to hamper fires that could happen.
We live in an area that has lots of heat in the summer and we hit 101F several times last summer along with the high 90's for about 6 weeks. Tiring but we don't stop because of it. It has to be similar for everyone who lives in hot climes in the summer.

  11. We're in the middle of winter where I live (southern part of the US) and the highs this week are in the mid 70s F. So yeah it's winter and I'm making a sleeveless dress! I must be a wimp because I could not survive the summer without AC.

  12. We've been watching the news with astonishment tonight, the heat is relentless and the fires devastating. My daughter is a mad keen volleyballer too and came home from the NZ secondary schools tourney at the end of last year with a trophy. Made all the sweeter because she and her partner were called in at the last minute to fill a gap in the draw. I know what you mean about teaching in a classroom without a/c - not looking forward to Feb.

  13. Well our daughter's have possibly played against each other! Mine has been over to NZ a few times with the schools cup (indoor volleyball), and loves it each time.
And wouldn't an a/c classroom just be heaven to teach in...

  14. I am not a lover of high temperatures. Over here in the UK I find our hotter days intolerable, nowhere near as hot as your country gets. Hope you can find a shady corner,
    Louise
